the brilliant fall of gianna z by kate messner

gianna

summer was slow for new releases but it’s
now fall and you, fortunate reader, are in luck.
there will be quite a few awesome debs releases
and today, kate messner is stopping by for
THE BRILLIANT FALL OF GIANNA Z!

About The Brilliant Fall of Gianna Z

Gianna Zales has a lot on her plate this fall –
a father who drives her to school in the family
hearse, a mother who’s turned into the junk
food police, a little brother who thinks he’s a
member of the paparazzi, and a grandmother
who leaves false teeth in the refrigerator. Worst
of all, she’s left her 7th grade leaf collection to
do at the last minute. It’s a monster project, and
Gianna will miss cross-country sectionals if she
doesn’t meet the deadline. She’ll need the help
of her geeky friend, Zig, and some brilliant ideas
of her own to pull it off.

About Kate Messner

Kate Messner grew up in Medina, New York and
graduated from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse
School of Communication with a degree in Broadcast
Journalism. She worked as a television news producer
and reporter in Syracuse, NY and then Burlington, VT,
before going back to school to get a teaching degree.
These days, Kate is a National Board Certified middle
school English teacher. She has helped hundreds of kids
work on leaf collection projects and likes sugar maples
and catalpa leaves the best. Kate lives on Lake Champlain
with her husband and kids and loves spending time
in the woods.

and the famous cindy interview!

1. who is your literary character crush?
Albus Dumbledore. (Stop laughing…I have always
had a thing for older men.)

2. who is your author crush? (does not have to
be romantic!)

Gosh, there are SO many authors whose work I admire
so much. People like Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary
deserve so much credit for paving the way for those of
us who write for kids today. I think writers like Jane Yolen,
Laurie Halse Anderson, Sara Zarr, Wendy Mass, Elise Broach,
Blue Balliett, Cynthia Lord, and Linda Urban are amazing
talents. And I’d be lost without my critique group members
Loree Griffin Burns, Eric Luper, and Liza Martz. (Am I allowed
to have that many literary crushes? They’re all important!)

you are a passionate writer. i love that! =D

3. what is your favorite pastry?
Chocolate croissants

but i love chocolate croissants even more!

4. what is the favorite scene from your novel?
The scene on the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail in Ripton,
Vermont. I loved walking there and researching, and it’s an
important turning point in the book, too.

that sounds lovely! can’t wait to read this scene.
