it’s a fish! sweet pea declared proudly.
the medium was kiddie paint on the back
of mommy’s recycled manuscript pages. =D
she never ceases to surprise and delight me
with her paintings and drawings. it’s so fascinating
and amazing to see a five year old brain at work!
the actual painting has a lot of texture, with hurried
scratches beneath the giant rainbow fish that
remind me of see grass. it’s amazing. i’m so proud!
do you like the obviously girl fishy with her long
lashes? haha! i’d like to say i’ve always encouraged
sweet pea to draw and paint and steered her toward
art, but that’s not the case. she just took to it the minute
she entered preschool and has been loving art ever since.
she also likes to “compete” with me, as the better
artist. that’s right. i’m not sure if this must be number
one competitive streak is due to being first born, age
or personality or all, but observe the following convo
(which was not the first time she had asserted herself
as a better artist than mommy, ha!)
she did a lovely drawing of us (me with wavy hair, too!)
with a colorful designed banner on top, with star stickers
to boot!
sp : but mommy, i’m a better artist than you.
(after i complimented her on her art.)
me : why?
sp : because i give my art away.
me : but mommy gives her art away too!
mommy even sells her art!
sp : for how much? for ten dollars?
me : for hundreds of dollars.
sp : oh, i wish it were for ten dollars.
me : why?
sp : ten dollars is A LOT of money.
me : o.O
haha! i love my sweet pea!
and i’ve started writing the sequel again!
3k in new words so far. been percolating
and hoping for the much coveted
diamond plops. wish me luck, everyone!!
was able to watch star trek for our date night
(thanks for babysitting, amy!) and loved it.
have a crush on spock now. i’ve noticed that
i’m analyzing movies often, comparing them to
aspects in writing like, oh, that’s great characterization
or foreshadowing was handled well, etc. it
doesn’t distract me from enjoying the film, but
it does help me with my own process in writing.
the first novel is always about finding your own
process. and i think the second is still, very much so.
i’ve a lot more to learn! yay! =D
got my first “fan mail” this past week from complete
strangers, and it was so so thrilling! those words
of encouragement and excitement after reading
Silver Phoenix most definitely are an author’s best
reward. thank you for reading and writing!! =D
currently reading : north of beautiful
by justina chen headley
and please don’t forget about my super duper
original brush painting + signed copy of Silver Phoenix
or $100 bookstore giftcard contest. i’ve been valiantly
deleting bot spam on that post (like hundreds!) to keep
it open, so don’t let my effort go to waste. ha! comment
on links or reviews on actual post. cheers!!

hahahahaha. i love the painting! she’s so talented, seriously. use of color is awesome. my paintings def didn’t look like that at her age.
and. i can so hear her having that convo. that’s HILARIOUS.
Oh, that painting is cute!
I do the same things at movies–and with other books now. I find myself “analyzing” while reading/watching. The husband always calls me on it and asks how I can still enjoy myself, but I do!
Love the painting! For both of my children, their best work (to me, the most colorful and imaginative) happened right around age 5 and 6. I don’t know what happened after that. Perhaps the art teachers started to ‘teach’ them how to paint more lifelike? But I have a few paintings which are framed and hanging on our walls.
in these economic times, $10 IS a lot of money. JL is very perceptive ;)
9, haha! too true!
and so glad you guys enjoyed my little
artist too. chris, i hope she continues
to paint and draw with unlimited imagination. at least for a few more years…
That painting is awesome! Kids are such a crack up, too ;).
Good luck with your writing! We’re so excited to read the sequel, so sending good writing juju your way.
By the way, Spock is my wallpaper now because… yeah. LOVED the new Star Trek!
i LOVE good juju! *stuffs into mouth*
thanks rebecca!! =D spock…dreamy.
Belated congrats on the release of Silver Phoenix!
Sweet Pea has exceptional colour sense! Her painting is the prettiest thing I’ve seen all day. :)
Talent obviously runs in the family! I love the eyelashes on the fish! My daughter always creates girly things too.
Good luck with your sequel!
aww, thank you mary and kelly!
kelly, she asks me to post her art on the computer. she loves it when i do. haha!
As a teacher, I am always amazed at children’s art…especially the young ones. Their art is so full of their voice or personality, which if you build on it can spill over into writing. Have her tell you a story about the fish. You will be surprised, I’m sure!
Your daughter’s painting is beautiful! Definitely worth framing.
I love Sweet Pea’s painting! :)
Haha, ten dollars IS a lot of money!
way to go, mama and sp :)
shelly, yes! her kindy teacher is always asking that she tell a story and then draw the scene. so cute and imaginative!
thank you vivian and sonnie!
sara, i agree. ha!
/bootay shake! laughing wolf! =D
That is a beautiful painting! I’d pay sweetpea for that–how about ten bucks worth of sweeties? ;)
And I’ve just ordered Silver Phoenix, can’t wait to read it :)
Good luck with the sequel…and you’re so right about finding your writing voice in the first one, I’m just settling into mine, at long last…
