i was at my very first comicon convention
and am still recovering! officially, i was really
only there for about a day and a half. but the
people and the noise and the endless lines!
lines were sprouting out of every corner. people
were sitting on the ground in every nook and cranny.
there was a line to get into a line to get into another
line. i was pretty much lost and didn’t get any swag.
tho i did pick up transformer and my little pony
posters for the bublets. =)
on thursday afternoon, i had my very first con panel.
imagine my surprise when i showed up fifteen minutes
early to see a long line snaking from the door around one
corner AND another! wow. i think they were mostly there
for jacqueline carey and patrick rothfuss. most of my
friends couldn’t get into the room, they turned people away.
i was nervous.
but i managed to make a few points
without making an utter fool of myself.
i was told i was succinct by greg van eekhout [NORSE CODE]
and patrick rothfuss [THE NAME OF THE WIND],
tho i didn’t feel thus. ha!
i DID make the point of saying how much i loved
being a YA author (i think i may have been the
only one on the panel?) and how great YA fans are. *nods*
after, we had a signing, and i sold quite a few
copies of Silver Phoenix, so hoorah to that! many
hadn’t heard of the book before the panel so i was
happy to reach a broader audience. they were impressed
by my succinct contribution to discussion. ha! =D
and even after that, pat and i spent about an hour
just chatting about books and writing and the
publishing industry. he was loads of fun to talk to.
on the second day, i went in costume as :
*the pg version.
*the more accurate non-pg gaming version.
CHUN LI of streetfighter!
and boy, i can honestly tell you i knew
what it felt like to be almost famous. it is
the oddest thing to have your name whispered
and shouted while walking down the halls and
have fanboys and girls chasing after you for a
foto. of course, i loved it! loads of fun!!
*me with my friend nels of aarising. we met first
thing in the morning so i’m bright eyed chun li. ha!
i was there only for two signings before i had to go
pick up the bubs from summer camp. the first was
kami garcia and margie stohl’s BEAUTIFUL CREATURES
arc signing. which was a smashing success. these
debut authors were mobbed! while standing in line
like the fangirl that i am, sarah rees brennan
(THE DEMON’S LEXICON) introduced
herself to me!
*sarah is like a model! she’s lovely and vivacious
and i had loads of fun chatting with her! and
she patiently took fotos of me with various
fanboys and girls–thank you, sarah!! (that would
be me as chun li, not as cindy pon, alas, ha!)
*we managed to take a foto at the signing!
sarah, me, margie and kami!
after wandering a bit through the exhibit with
sarah, i stood in line at starbucks to grab lunch.
then waited for alyson noel (EVERMORE
and BLUE MOON) sarah and mary pearson’s
(THE ADORATION OF JENNA FOX) signing. there,
i was able to take a foto with khy and senfaye!
*khy, me and senfaye!
and alas, i only had a brief chance to talk
to alyson and mary. but it was fantastic to meet
them! they are both inspirations to me!
*me, alsyon noel and mary pearson.
after the signing, i had to jet to pick up the
bubs. i stopped before exiting and tore off my
two inch white go go boots. who knew they could
be so lethal? after four hours, i felt like i needed
to amputate my toes. i’m still trying to recover!!
and i’ll leave you with a foto of a little fan. she
was so cute! and yes, i wore boy shorts. as hot
as chun li is, i couldn’t abide by her crotch shots. ha!
and now it’s past 11pm and i still have
yet to watch any mindless tele. THE HORROR!
still in the midst of my sequel deadline, will update
when i can. happy happy monday to all! xo

You make a hot Chun Li! <3
That was an amazing recap!!! And how cool is that? You rock as Chun Li! Oh my gosh! I love that you did that!
thanks niji and ello!!
ello–it was loads of fun. when at comicon, cosplay! and i don’t even dress up for halloween. ha!
That looks like loads of fun!
You are an utterly gorgeous Chun Li! Your costume is spot on (and I don’t think even the real Chun Li would have objected to the shorts, ha!)
dara, it was!
jill, thank you!! the real chun li can get away with high kicks and crotch shots. me, not so much. ha!
You rock, Cindy!
Congrats on all your well earned success!
Lines snaking out the door—how fun:)
awww, jill thank you! i can’t wait to see you next week! i wish i could say the lines were for me. ha! but it was loads of fun to be on a first panel that was so well attended!!
Hooray for having fangirls and boys! Plus, that is hilariously awesome that you cosplayed. And streetfighter no less! Love. It.
You rock, Cindy!
You already know how much I love it, Cindy. 100% awesomeness on the Geek-o-meter.
Interesting people you met there as well!
Cindy, you look so fabulous in that costume! Wow! And I applaud the boy short decision :-) Glad you had a great time! Good luck with the sequel deadline…how are you doing with it??
rebecca, hurrah for chun li love! i figured i’d have fun with it!! and it was super fun!!
robinson–so glad you enjoyed my geekiness. =D
angie, yes, i would have been a less confident more nervous chun li without my boy shorts. ha! and sequel is going well. thanks for asking!
Cindy, you look AMAZING!
What a super cool day(s) to experience.
omg I love that costume
can’t wait to see what you come up with for LA!
Cindy, loved the costume! You should consider going as Ai Ling to some cons.
I’ve considered going as my Kron Darkbow character. And it scares me slightly that yes, I have the wardrobe and the weaponry.
looks like a lot of fun!
thanks kelly and martha! martha, you’ll be at scbwi? hoorah! i’ll be in same costume. another reason i loved this because it’s BLUE and fits the theme. so you’ll get to see chun li in person! =DD
ty–i’d love to see you dressed up as your hero. no one would know who i was if i dressed up as ai ling. ha! but if i could get a hot guy to be chen yong, maybe that would work. =D
hannah–it was so fun!
I love Chun Li! And you wear her so well. :)
What a great time! When are you coming out to Philly, so you can sign my book, hmm, hmm? *wink*
I had no idea who Chun Li was, but you’re totally adorable in that get-up. Yay for any excuse to wear a costume!
shveta–one day, i hope!!! *dreams the dream* and thanks for the chun li compliment!!! YAY!
bryn, hee! <3 have you not ever seen streetfighter game?! i hung out with gaming boys so…
Hi Cindy!
Looks like you had a FABULOUS time! And your costume was AWESOME!
Also, just wanted to let you know I just finished reading Silver Phoenix a few days ago and I absolutely LOVED IT. I very rarely read fantasy novels but your story was so intriguing–and your descriptions SO VIVID–that I dreaded coming to the last page. I didn’t want the story to end! And now, it’s so good to hear you’re doing a sequel. Can’t wait till it’s published!
Oh yes, will you be doing any book signings in New York soon?
crystal, thank you so much! i’m so happy you enjoyed my debut! and i’m headed to nyc in september and am trying to get a signing there–will keep everyone posted!
Hey, Cindy, I’m late to the party! Love your costume. You look fantastic!
:-) E
I had an awesome time meeting you again! :D
khy! <3
love your alien!!
edna, thank you! i’ll see you next weekend!! =D
